Insights into Faith-Led Health Approaches from the Le Afio'aga O Aotearoa’s Pre-Summit

Mangere, Auckland- April

On April 10th, Le Afio'aga launched its two-day Collective Summit programme with the inaugural Pre-Summit event, a powerful opening providing a platform for spiritual leaders to present their spiritually driven health plans.

The event encompassed presentations from seven of Le Afio’aga o Aotearoa’s (LAOA) spiritual partners, each presenting their uniquely designed, faith-based health plans—bold, culturally grounded initiatives aimed at improving well-being within their congregations and Pacific communities.

The Pre-Summit Programme was more than a gathering—it was a statement of intent. It provided a dedicated platform for churches and spiritual leaders to take the lead in addressing the health and well-being of their respective congregations. With a shared belief that faith and health are deeply intertwined, the event set the tone for the summit’s overarching theme of holistic, culturally rooted care.

A highlight of the morning was a compelling keynote address by Asiata Professor Satu Viali, Chairman of the Samoan Medical Council. Professor Viali spoke brilliantly on the integration of health and spiritual well-being, highlighting how a unified approach benefits not only individuals but entire communities. He commended the spiritual partners for their leadership and foresight in developing health plans that speak directly to the spiritual, mental, and physical needs of their congregations.

His words reinforced the importance of faith-based solutions in the wider health ecosystem and affirmed the value of empowering churches as essential actors in health promotion and service delivery.

Throughout the rest of the morning, attendees were further inspired by the presentations from each church, showcasing community-led health initiatives rooted in faith, culture, and lived experience. Leaders shared how their congregations are addressing pressing health challenges—from mental health and nutrition to spiritual wellness—through innovative, faith-driven responses.

One message stood out—churches are already doing the work. What’s needed now is continued support, resourcing, and collaboration to scale their impact. These spiritual leaders are not only guiding their congregations in faith, but also championing their communities’ physical and mental well-being.

The Le Afio'aga Pre-Summit marked a bold and hopeful beginning to the two-day Collective Summit. It honoured churches not just as spiritual homes, but as pillars of community transformation—grounded in culture, driven by love, and powered by faith.

As we transition into Day Two of the Summit, we carry with us the insight, unity, and commitment ignited during the Pre-Summit. Together, we move forward—stronger, more connected, and spiritually led in our shared mission for holistic Pacific well-being.
